What can you do with a lacquar finsh if you are not happy with the the color? Will I have to strip it or sand it to be able to darken the stain?

Basically you have two options that don't involve stripping. You can apply a glaze (which is nothing more than a heavybodied stain) over the piece to adjust the color, or use a 'toner'. This is lacquer in aerosol form that has color added. These toners are usually only available from suppliers catering to the refinishing industry.
A word of caution. If you use either of these methods, you'll have to finish the piece with aerosol lacquer. Trying to brush a lacquer coat over either the glaze or the toner will destroy your effort beyond repair.
