What is the customary way to finish a maple dining room table after it's sanded? 240 is the last grit that was used on it. I was going to use a poly finish, as I thought that is "what is used." Then I got to thinking about furniture wax. I have never refinished furniture and this project won't be repeatd anytime soon, so before proceding, I thought I had better ask some questions so that I won't be sorry later.
Your help will be appreciated. Thank you. :)

Wax, as a finish be itself, is the least protective finish you can use.
Traditionally, wax finishes are applied OVER another finish - a properly applied wax finish makes dusting a breeze, whcih (aside from dressing it up slightly) is the primary purpose.
Your choice of poly in the appropriate sheen should go on first. It's about the most durable finish available on the market today.
