How can I get the mexican rustic look on unfinished pine, Is this acomplished by just using oil, or will it need stianing first?. Will this work on any pine ?

Thanks,
Rick

Rick:

"Rustic", Mexican or not, varies from individual to individual.

Take a good look at a piece in the style of finish you like. If there's noticable variation in color, chances are it was achieved with stain.

As to pine - they ain't all the same. Southern yellow pine has a pronounced grain. It stains easily, but the grain REALLY comes through. White pine and 'sugar' pine have virtually no grain at all. Although they work (router, carving, etc.)well, I feel they lack 'character'.

One of my favorite woods is Radiata Pine, which has some grain, few knots, and is very stable. It stains beautifully. Your local lumber yard may stock it.

Before staining any full piece, stain a scrap first, to determine just what the stain will do to a particular type of wood.
