we just bought a 1929 colonial in new england the chimney seems ok in the basement and in the attic , but on the roof the bricks seem to be loose. not falling down but you can see through the mortar in some spots could this be fixed without taking it apart, and how big of a job would this be. I have done masonry before a few times but not on a chimney.

If you can see right through some of the joints then it should most likely come right down to the roofline. Each course should be inspected from your cap coarse all the way down to the flashing.{and beyond where the chimney goes through the framing}Re-pointing will not give you the strength that a teardown would. If you decide to tear it down, also remember to inspect your flues and flashing and replace if necessary.
