I am patching/reconstructing an interior brick
column/wall that is 3 bricks deep and am using old bricks that match the
existing ones. A lot of the bricks I have gathered
have paint on one side. My question is: if I turn the painted side inward (so it doesn't show) will
the mortar adhere to it or does it need to be
cleaned off first (a real pain)?
any advice much appreciated!

As long as mortar comes in contact with all head and bed joints and not touch any painted sides it will bond. Also many of these older style bricks are very soft and clay like and soak up water very quickly.I've seen some so absorbent that when you lay them it sucks the water right out of the mortar immediately. You may want to consider dampening these before you lay them so you get a good bond
