what is the easiest way to install the drain on a whirlpool tub..it looks as if i am going to have to to some cutting to make it fit and suggestions

Here are a couple of tub drains above the trap.

Use plumber's putty under the drain lip in the tub. Roll a roll in your hands, and wrap it around the hole, and then tighten the drain down on it and wipe off the excess.
Cut and make up the connections as necessary before securing the drain to the drain pipes.
