I recently exposed the brick on an inside wall of my 1900 house, and the brick needs to be cleaned up a bit. I understand that muriatic acid is most commonly used, but am unsure how to use it. Does anyone have any suggestions, or can recommend a safer alternative? Thx!

You've got brick from 1900!!! Don't ruin them now!!! Stay away from power washing and harsh chemicals.

What is it that you have to clean? Dirt, soot, old mortar?

You've probably got hand-made brick... or soft-mud brick. These brick are basically clay sponges. Whatever product you end up using to clean them with, PLEASE PLEASE soak the brick thoroughly with clean water first... allowing the wicking process to start, so that the chemicals stay only on the surface.

The best way to clean will be with a scrub brush and elbow grease!

Good luck!

We have exposed soft brick in the bathroom! Toothpaste, soap and loads of dust are dulling the beauty of the brick and mortar. I have NO clue as to what types of products are available to clean it. Can you suggest what specific types of products are available and where they can be purchased?

... masonry supplier for what "they" carry.

DO NOT USE MURIATIC ACID. We carry the full line of "Sure Klean" products... and probably #600 Detergent would be best.

As we always suggest, thoroughly soak the brick with clean water first... so that whatever cleaner you choose only works on the surface... and does not get "sucked" into the porous brick.

Good luck with your project!
