Here's the situation we have. We put hardwood in our dining room but not in the adjoining hall. So, the hardwood all ends in a straight line in the middle of the doorway and butts up to carpet in the hall. Now, we want to put hardwood in the hall but don't know how to deal with the straight edge in the doorway. My husband wants to lay the strips in the hall in the opposite direction of the dining room so it would look intentional. And, I agree that it would look good that way. However, doing it that way would make the strips in the hall run parallel to the floor joists instead of perpendicular like they're supposed to be. I don't think we should do it that way but my husband insists that it's such a small area it will be OK (it's about 4' by 8'). Who's right? And, if I'm right that we should not do it that way, do you have any suggestions on what we can do?

It is recommended that wood floors be installed where possible perpendicular to floor joists for maximum support. Installation parallel to joists is not recommended if joist spacing exceeds 19.2" unless subfloor is properly stiffened. Stiffening may require additional layer of subflooring to bring overall thickness to at least 1 1/8".
