We're updating the kitchen in our home.
It's 36 years old; the cabinets are not original, and we
are doing a minor reno to avoid replacing the cupboards.
We've TSP'd, and sanded them. We're not sure what
they are; they appear to be a wood laminate with an old
dark stain.
We've applied one coat of melamine, (white).
They certainly look brighter, but I think we should have primer'd
them first, (even though this was not suggested to us).
The surface is orange peely, and I think we could probably sand them down again, and use that coat as a primer in absentia, and
the apply another coat to even out the finish.
Melamine is not easy to work with, and smells dreadful.
Does anyone out there have any other suggestions?
We've already put a lot of elbow grease into this project, and
I don't want it to look half-arsed.
We plan to work on them again this weekend, so any responses would be greatly appreciated.

From what I have seen of melamine paint is that it is for painting onto melamine surfaces. Thus, a melamine surface would not need a primer as it is alraedy sealed.
Your tsp and sanding prep sounds good, but most of the experts here would certainty recommend a primer for your kitchen cabinets.

We're going to go at them again tonight, and rescuff them.
Even though there is a coat of melamine on them, we're going
to lay a coat of primer on the new surface, and then apply
the 2nd, and hopefully final coat of melamine.
I'll let you know how it turns out!

Just to update anyone who was reading with interest...
We sanded the first coat of melamine again.
Then, we applied a latex primer.
We then gave the cupboards a second coat of melamine, but
this time, instead of using the recommended sponge roller, we
used it, and a high quality brush to help smooth out the finish.
We also used a small sponge brush, working in the direction of
the brush stroke in the tight areas and corners.
This helped a lot.
Bottom line: Melamine is very difficult to work with, and will
require a lot of attention before you let it dry.
Oh yes, drying time is anywhere from 10 to 24 hours to ensure
it's hard, and not tacky to the touch.
Go with an acrylic semi gloss, or one of the newer latex paints instead.

try thinning primer first
