Our tub/shower surround was a handyman special installation prior to our buying the house. While installing, glue used to attach this to drywall bled out. The surround is an off white color but yellowed where the glue leaked on to it. Short of replacing, which I would assume would involve replacing drywall, is it possible to use some sort of paint to cover?

I have attempted various cleaning agents with no luck in removing any of this. It is not thick enough to scrape but just discolors the surround and makes it look messy. I'd like to cover it with something if possible as I am not in a position at this time for major renewal.

Sounds like replacement is really your only option. As you said, the sheetrock will have to aslo be replaced. To do it yourself, and to do it right, with a good tub surround and the sheetrock, you are looking at a few hundred dollars and a couple of days work. The sheetrock will be less that $50, the majority of the expense will be the surround.
