Hello,

I tried, unsuccessfully, to fix a leaky trap today. While I was able to replace a washer and stop leaking in one place, I now have a leak between the tailpiece and the waste pipe. I have some sort of adapter from the trap tailpiece to the waste pipe that I purchased which is supposed to have a built in seal, but it is not working at all. The tailpiece just slides into that adapter and then the adapter screws into the waste pipe.

Does anybody have any suggestions for fixing this problem?

Tim

If you have a plastic compression washer, the flat side goes toward the nut.
If all else fails, just smear a little silicone caulk on it, and that will seal it.
Good Luck!

Brass or plastic trap? They use different washers. Plastic drain parts use the beveled washers. Brass drains use rubber washers that are flat on both sides.

Also, don't reuse the old washer from the old trap. Replace it with a new one. You may want to use a new nut also.

Thanks to all who responded. I think I have a brass compression washer. Is that possible. If so, I wonder if some silicone caulk would work there? I would basically be sealing between the washer and the tailpiece pipe for the trap.

Yes, you could have a chromed brass slip nut.
Use a new rubber washer, as lefty said, and you shouldn't even need any silicone.
Good luck!
