View Full Version : Pulling up old carpet on stairs

I want to pull up the carpet on my stairs. After lifting some of the carpet I noticed that the risers do not fill the whole area and that there are 3 or 4 inches on each side of the riser open to the basement. My intention had been to paint the stairs but now I don't know what to do. How do I fill in the gaps? I would prefer to not have to recarpet for two reasons. I consider carpets dust traps and therefore a health hazard and I have a basement entry house so we use the stairs continually to enter the upper floor which is the main living area of the house. The carpet is very old, dirty and worn. Does anyone have any suggestions. I have purchased laminate for the main living area but I have not yet tried to assemble it. :(
