We are installing t & g pine ceiling and would like suggestions on cutting holes for many can lights. Is a jig saw the best option for a smooth cut? The concern is not to get a rough edge under the molding ring.

A variable speed jig saw would be your best bet.
Keep a sharp blade in it.
Good luck!

I realize that this is probably way too late but for anyone else who may look in -- The best thing happening for this type of job is the new rotary saw tools that are available. RotoZip was the first, but there are many others available now, including an attachment for a Dremel type tool -- WORKS GREAT!!
GOOD LUCK!
