View Full Version : Old wood floors

I have wood floors in my old 1920 home that have carpet over them. My husband and I have peeled the carpet back, and they look to be in very good shape. Some scratches were a closet used to be. What should I clean the floors with? How do I find out what they are finished with currently if anything? Can I leave them bare / unfinished until spring, when I would like to get them finished professionally. What can I do in the mean time to have them look decent?

My guess would be to leave the carpet as is until you're ready to peel it up and refinish the wood floor underneath.

The carpet is probably better than having the wood unprotected for that long of a time.

You may want to confirm that the floor can be refinished. It has to have enough wood left on it and not down to the tongue and grooves.
