One way to remove texture is to dampen it with a spray bottle (like a Windex bottle) and scrape it off with a wide sheetrock blade.
Try that. Experiment in an area without a seam. Spray it only enough to get the texture wet.
It's very messy, but the only way that I know.
Doing a smooth skim-coat over the whole wall, if it's too thick, is another alternative.
Good luck!

Having tried this, I found it easier to cover my plaster walls with 3/8" drywall. Just another consideration.

I agree with the previous post. I removed popcorn texture from one ceiling, and that was enough! Granted, it was harder because it had asbestos, so I had to wear protective gear. For my other room, I just hung drywall over it.
As an aside, if it is popcorn, and if it is old (mid 70's or earlier), you might want to have it tested for asbestos.
