The tile in our kitchen has been in the house we purchased recently for some time. It seems that the grout and tile were never cleaned by the previous owners. The grout has a heavy buildup. I am trying to determine what is the best way to clean both the tile and grout? Is one product out there better and safer for the tile?

James,
Go to a tile store and buy the product they recommend. There are a number of products out there.

It's always best if ceramic tile isn't allowed to accumulate dirt, grease, and mineral deposits, or soap scum. The tiles are essentially glass and can be renewed with a household cleaner and lots of elbow grease. The grout, if not sealed, will collect oils, soils, and stains because it is made of sand and/or cement. Sealed grout is easier to clean and reduces the chances of permanent stains.
There are commercial grout cleaners available at home centers. Continual use of household cleaners containing acids for cleaning grout will eventually erode the alkaline grout. Should you opt to try cleaning your grout with an acidic household cleaner like Tile Juice from The Clean Team (www.thecleanteam.com) Lime-A-Way, Dow Bathroom Cleaner, X14 or other acidic household cleaner, be sure you rinse well. Beware that these products may also affect grout color if you have colored grout. Always test products in inconspicuous place first for ill effects. An old toothbrush is helpful in cleaning grout.
Once you get your grout clean, seal with a couple coats of quality penetrating sealer. Some recommend that you repeat this once or twice a year. Follow manufacturer's directions.

OxyClean is an oxygenating bleach and may affect color of colored grout. Test in inconspicuous place before using to see if there are any immediate ill effects. Proceed with caution using products containing peroxides as they can remove color slowly over time if not properly rinsed.
