We have a gas heater (General Electric) that we guess is the same age as our house (19 years). When we set the thermostat to the desired temperature instead of continuosly running until the desired temperature is met the furnace runs for about 1-2 minutes; shuts off for approximately 30 seconds then goes on again repeating the same process irregardless of the pre-set temperature. We have been in the house for four years and this is the first year that we have experienced this problem. We appreciate your help.

P.S.
The batteries in the thermostat were replaced today.

Are the burners staying lit? Or are they also coming on and off? Does the fan come on? Are your filters clean?
