Hello: Tom Sawyer

The answer to your question, based soely upon the limited information you provided, may be the cost of energy in your area, whether the garage is attached or detached from the house, if there is already a source of gas and or electric in the garage.

If the area is small and your not overly concerned about energy costs, a small electric room heater may suffice, circumstances providing and it's safe to do so.

If initial outlay of cash isn't a concern, there is already a source of gas within the garage, gas is less expensive then electical power and the situation will be long term, it may be cost effective to install a suspended gas heater, or some other type of small BTU gas heating unit.

However, before making a purchase of a gas heater of any type, check with the building and safety department in your area.

Obtain the professional advice, suggestions and opinions of several heating agents within your area. They are listed in the phone book.

Tom,

If the only reason that you are heating the garage is because the dogs live there, why don't you look into a heated dog bed. The dogs will love you for it. Most dogs do not take well to heated areas....The heat dries them out, just like it does us. With a heated bed, the dog can adjust his own enviorment. If it's cold, he can lie in the heated bed. If he gets too hot, he can move. Also the difference in the cost to heat is considerable. The installation would also be quicker and less expensive. Also if you heat the garage with conventional methods, the heat will not be down at floor level where the dogs are.

Here's a link to just one maker of the beds. I found it by a search for "heated dog beds".
