I am getting ready to change out my old natural gas furnace with a new high efficiency unit. From what I understand, the old flue pipe must be changed out with a PVC or ABS plastic pipe so it won't rust due to the high amounts of moisture passing through it. Do I use standard schedule 40, or does this have to be a certain material to withstand the heat? Also, what type of roof cap should be installed? Thank you in advance.

Hello MightyQ and Welcome to the Heating and Cooling Appliance forum and our Do-It-Yourself Web Site.

There is no definitive or specific answer to your question. Each manufacturer has specific requirements based upon the unit type, efficiency rating and model.

Local building and safety codes may also govern flue pipe installations. Check with your local city department for the requirements.

sch. 40 PVC is recomended by most manufacturers. Exhaust gas temps are around the 75 deg. mark. Depending on the make of your new unit.....all manufacturers make vent temination kits.
