The outside heatpump fan to my HVAC unit will not shut off. It has been running constantly for the past three days, even though the system is turned off at the thermostat. When I throw the breaker or turn the outside switch off, the fan stops, but starts immediately when I turn the breaker or switch back on.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for the assistance.

The contactor seems to be stuck. type of system? package or split?

It's a split unit

You haven't given us much info on the make, type or age of your unit, but it sounds like one set of contacts on the compressor contactor is stuck closed giving you a completed circuit for the fan. If your unit is an older model, you could have a seperate relay for the fan, with the a stuck contact. In either case, you ought to replace the component If you're going to DIY, get an exact replacemenmt, and relocate every wire exactly where it was removed from. Lesson #1 is turn off the power, 240 can put a hurtin on you. If you aren't sure, call a licenced tech.

If your unit goes into defrost and OD fan keeps running--you have a separate relay for defrost that needs to be replaced.PDF
