Great forum!
I need to know what you tile guys do when you're retiling the bottom half of the walls of a circa 1950's bath. I ripped out all of the old tile, mortar, and wire mesh (totalling from 1.5 to 2 inches in thickness, which I didn't expect and probably wouldn't have started if I had known). Anyway, aside from my previously posted problems about a lack of framing to attach durock in the corners of the room, i'm puzzled about how far out from the framing to mount the backerboard. My original plan was to sort of "double-up" the studs side by side with new studs that stick out further (or use thick furring strips like 1x2) to bring the finished tile wall out to it's original position. I also read somewhere about mounting half inch greenboard behind backerboard to simulate a mud job and bring the tile out. It seems to me that I should have the top edge of the durock far enough out to cover the rough bottom edge of the existing plaster. And by the way, what IS the best fastener for durock, especially if you would need to go through a layer of durock and a layer of greenboard?
