Have a problem with the burner that it keeps on going and ignores the thermostat temperature to cease at 68 degrees. The honeywell electronic programmable thermostat is set for 68 to shut down the furnance, but it keeps on going and i have to shut the burner by emergency switch. This is the third thermostat i put in and wonder why it dont register. It doesnt happen often but it did happen twice this month .I restart the burner and it runs okay then bingo it runs the temperature upward till i have to shut it down for a while and re start up again to its normal degree. I was hoping to find out before i call in a plumber or oil burner to see what the problem is.Maybe the burner is in need for a cleaning. Would appreciate any help i can get .

thank you

if the burners are lit after the thermostat reaches temp, remove the white wire at the t stat if it continues to burn very possible the gas valve is sticking......VERY DANGEROUS

Noted, that you said oil burner...Have the burner relay checked, the contacts may be sticking. Also if you know how to use a volt meter.......check for control signal for heat at the burner control. If no signal, it's the relay. If you get a signal it's the t'stat. Also the t'stat may not be compatable with an oil type system.
