Hello,
My parents-in-law have a flapper that looks like two cylinders stacked on top of each other, and a chain that looks like a chain of beads. The problem is that the chain keeps getting separated from the clip that holds it onto the flush lever.
Does anyone know a simple way to get this chain off of the flapper so I can install a new metal chain (already have replacement chain)? I really don't want to replace the flush valve assembly, since this would involve removing the tank, and I really don't want to get into that while here for only the weekend.
Thanks in advance for your help.

cbarry,
You should be able to simply push the old chain down and out of the small hole in the flapper assembly. You can do this in a moment while the tank/bowl is in the flush mode w/o even turning the water supply off. The new chain should have a small bell shaped rubber grommet that you just seat in the hole after threading the chain up through the hole. Then just adjust/fasten the chain to the lever arm. You might have to readjust the chain until the correct amount of slack is obtained(the chain needs to let the flapper seat fully to allow the tank to refill, and at the same time be able to lift the flapper to start the flush.
I hope this helps,
fred.
BTW - the tank doesn't have to be removed to intall new internal parts, just drained by shutting off the water supply line.
