Last week I began pulling old tile from a second bathroom and read a few things in this forum that helped unbelievably. After removing tar from the floor for the last week ( 1920 house), I am ready to put the cement 1/4" backerboard down. However, my sub floor ,consists of not of plywood, but of the original 1x6's directly attached to the joists. Should I put the mortar down then a backerboard or should I add a layer of plywood then the backerboard to help level it out and hopefully add stability? If so can I get away with 1/2" or 1/4"? I really dont want to add any more height to my floor, especially since the toilet will probably need two wax seals as it is. This is a great forum and Im glad so many people get so much help. Thanks.

Hey twilight,
I would put either 3/8" plywood then 1/4 " backer, or at least trade the 1/4" backer you have now for 1/2". Use the mortar between the wood and the backer board.
