This house is new to us. When the hot water taps are turned on, there is a high screeching noise in the bathroom pipes unless the water is turned on full force. I seem to remember hearing folks talk about air in pipes making this noise. Any suggestions?

If you had air in the pipes, the faucets would be "spitting" air and water, and it would eventually clear out fairly quickly.
This noise is much more likely caused by worn-out rubber washers on the end of a hot water valve stem(s).
I would test each hot water faucet, and replace each washer that creates a screech.
It may be caused by another problem, but go there first.
If that doesn't do it, you may need an expansion tank on your water heater (if you have a Pressure Reducing Valve on your main public water line).
Good Luck!
