We have a gap developing between our window and the sill on the inside of our house. What could be causing the gap. the house itself is 90 years old with brick exterior walls. We are unsure of the age of the windows, but they are probably 70s or 80s. Can we repair this gap? If so, how (caulking?)

If the cracks are minor (less than 1/8"), then caulking them with a bead of 100% silicon may be all that is required. But if they are larger than that, or if they continue to grow, have a reputable contractor (or 2, or 3) take a look at them. You might want them to be looked at BEFORE you fill them with silicon. It could be that they are nothing, or they might be a warning sign of some major problems.

what kinds of major problems could they be a sign of. the gap is a bit more than 1/8 inch. It also appears rather deep at one spot.

Could be a sign that the bricks or their mortar are deteriorating. Could be that the windows are resting on something other that the bricks, and that is starting to deteriorate. I can't see it, therefore, I can't say with much certainty. That is why I suggested having it looked at. I'm not trying to scare you. It could just as easily be nothing to be concerned with. But you'll sleep better at nite once you know FOR SURE.
