could a faulty thermostat prevent heat from coming on, even when i put the setting on 80?

The thermostat could be the reason, certainly. To test to veriy, remove it and connect ONLY the RED and WHITE wires together. If the furnace {Heating Unit} turns ON, you found the problem.

If the heater does not turn on, the thermostat isn't the problem.
In order to assist you further, you'll have to read the ARCHIVES, within this forum and locate some of the other possible problems.
