View Full Version : fan problems with furnace?????

I have a twentyfive year old furnace(I think Rud is the manufactuer) that until a couple of days ago worked fine. However, today the fan has decided to stop working. I'm not really sure if it is the fan motor though. After reading through some of the other pleas for help and seeing some of the responses, I guess it could be a number of things. All I can say is that the pilot is working, the thermostat has been replaced, but nothing happens after that. Please give me some advice

Hello UserMark and Welcome to the Heating and Cooling Appliance forum and our Do-It-Yourself Web Site.

If you already reviewed many of the replies on the topic of forced air fans that fail to turn on, you'll have to begin the process of locating the problem from the possible causes.

The most likely part to first suspect is the fan motor itself. Based on the number of years of operational service, possibly the motor brushes are wornout.

Turn off the electrical power and remove the motor or slide it out of the blower compartment and clean and inspect it. Attempt to oil the bearings of the motor if it has oiling caps. Also oil the fan cage bearings, if needed.

If these possible problem areas are not suspected to be the cause, then suspect the fan relay switch. The fan switch, on most older furnaces, is usually a single function item.

It fan switch may be either a fan "ON" switch or a fan "OFF" switch but may be an early version of a combo fan ON and OFF fan switch. Whichever, type it is, may be one of the probable causes for the problem description you posted.
