The most important proceedure is to always use extreme caution! Should there be a delayed ignition <backfire or explosion> while peering into the firebox, it would be equal to your looking down the barrel of a shotgun. Use EXTREME caution at all times.

Now that you have read the safety warning once, directly above, re-read it and all safety warnings provided on the unit, to be positive you fully understand what could, would and or may happen, should you attempt to relite your own water heaters pilot.

Secondly, if the unit was just installed, repaired, relocated, etc., prior to putting a match to the pilot light, be absolutely sure the water is turned on and the tank is completely full. This task can be accomplished by simply checking for water by turning on a hot water faucet in a sink.

Next step, to lighting the pilot on an existing, already filled, is to remove the front decorative cover panel. Then carefully remove the inner metal firebox cover. Use CAUTION! when removing the inner metal firebox cover. The cover may be HOT, if the pilot is currently on or the burner has been on recently.

What your looking for is a pilot flame. If there is a pilot flame currently on, the metal cover may be warm or hot. If the inner metal cover is cold and pilot flame is visable, for safety, turn the selector knob, usually located on top of the gas valve, to the "OFF" position, wait 5 minutes.

After the waiting time, turn the selector control knob, to the "PILOT" position. Depress the "RED" button, to the left of the selector knob and relite the pilot flame.

FYI:
The correct place to light the pilot, will be at the end of the pilot assembly. The pilots flame location is very near to a round burner flame spreader plate, inside the firebox.

After the pilot lights, continue to hold that "RED" button down for 60 seconds or so, then release it. The pilot flame should remain "ON." If the pilot flame remains on, correctly and securely replace the inner metal firebox cover.

For your personal safety, stand back at arms length and then rotate the selector knob to the "ON" position. The burner should light up. Replace the outer decorative cover and wait at least one hour to one and a half hours for the water in the tank to fully heat up.
