I need help!! We have a Moncrief 137000 BTU GFA furnace Model GSU137SE Serial #NAHVE. It is approximately 26 years old & has worked fine until last year when I switched from natural gas to propane. Now at night it shuts off and the pilot light goes out, Maybe from the colder temps at night. (We live in Wyoming) Im not sure what the incoming pressure or the pressure for the burners should be or what size orface is needed. When they switched me to propane they were suppose to change out everything that needed to be converted. When I checked it today, the flames are so big theyre going up the pipe. I fixed that but cant figure out why its only doing this at night??? Should I check for a crack in something???? My normal heating bill used to be about $120 a month now its running $200+ each month since I switched to propane which was about a year ago. I think that there is probably something very wrong with the Orface or the incoming pressure but not sure where to start looking. We live in a very very small town that doesnt even have a heating and cooling company in it so I have to fix it myself. Do you have and suggestions on what is wrong. Thanks

Hello Lori G. Welcome to the Heating and Cooling Appliance forum and the Do-It-Yourself Web Site.

There are several possible conditions that can cause the conditions that your describing. Some of them are minor and a few could be major.

There are also several questions that would need to be asked by those whom post replies back and answered by you. The information you provided does not include enough specific detail.

Based upon a few givens, from the info provided, the size of the unit {137,000 btu} indications the square footage to heat is fairly large.
The age of the heater {26yrs} indicates the unit may have developed a problem that could be far more serious then the pilot simply going out, etc.
Plus we have to assume the propane company did in fact fully convert the heater from nat gas to propane.
How the heater functioned prior while on natural gas and WHY the unit was convered, are still other considering factors that may shed some light on the current problem.

Contact the current supplier of propane and inquire about in home service. Your their customer and they may have some type of in home service plan.

You may need to have the unit at least inspected and serviced by a private heating agent to correct the current problem and yearly simply due to the units age.

Regards & Good Luck
