I need someone's advice on this situation. My 12 year old gas heater recently stopped working. I was told by the first technician to come out that it was not heating because the electric part that sparks the pilot light was faulty. So- I had another company with a better price on the part come out to fix it. The 2nd guy said we have a large crack in our heat exchanger and that it either needs to be replaced due to potential carbon monoxide poisoning or the entire unit should be replaced.
so - now I am faced with the choice.
Here is what I need to know: Is it completely unsafe to just use space heaters to heat the house? Do I need to worry about pipes bursting if I do that? Does the gas need to be turned off if I do not use the gas heater?

Hello Nashvillian and Welcome to the Heating and Cooling Appliance forum and our Do-It-Yourself Web Site.
Your topic here makes an important point. But first a question.
Not to sound sarcastic here, with you nor imply any sarcasm, rather to simply make a vaild point.
Did the second guy to come out REALLY have a better price? Or maybe that supposedly BETTER price was mearly a come-on???
Before you invest any money into replacing the existing heating unit or purchase any type of room...space heaters...pickup the phone and contact your local gas utility company.
If some parts of the USA, some states require the gas utilities to provide basic in home services either for appliance safety reasons and or services and or repairs. If such services are not available in your state or area, consider 2 other possibilites.
Obtain yet another opinion from another licensed heating company and or contractor, OR call back the first guy.
Regards & Good Luck
