View Full Version : Installing a gas dryer

The old gas dryer we inherited finally became unrepairable. I have bought a used gas dryer, and need to install it. I'm concerned because I have not worked with gas before, and don't want to lose the house (!). I'm hoping I won't need to bring in a plumber for this--this is a used machine and I don't want to run the cost up unnecessarily. The old pipe is fixed, not flexible. I suppose I will need to buy an adjustable fitting to make the pipe line up with the newer dryer. What other precautions do I need to take? There is a valve in the pipe on the ceiling above the appliance. It is currently horizontal with the pipe. How far do I need to turn it to shut the gas off--45 degrees? Any touchy pilot light issues I need to be aware of? Many thanks (in advance) for any feedback!

Hello Albert. Welcome to my Gas Appliances forum and our Do-It-Yourself Web Site.

Regardless of which type or style of shutoff valve is presentyl installed, if the gas is currently ON, turn the shut off valve so it is facing across the pipe and NOT inline with the pipe. Which means you'll turn it 90 degress from it's current position.

If the existing hard pipe stops in a location close to where the replacement dryer is to be installed, you can disconnect the existing dryer from the pipe and install an adaptor or another shutoff valve there.

Then install a 3/8 inch diameter by 5 to 8 foot long, one piece flexible connector to either the adaptor or shutoff valve you added at the end of that existing pipe.

Next install the male/female end adaptor to the intake pipe of the replacement dryer, if one isn't already installer or is not the correct size. Then install the other end of the flex connector to the dryers inlet adaptor.

Once all the parts are installed, turn the gas valve or valves on and test for tiny gas leask using a soapy water solution.

It is adviseable to inspect and clean the exhaust venting system whenever your working on the dryer.
