Span deep cracks with back up material. Foam back up rod is made for this purpose. It's available in various diameters. Other suitable materials include foam weather stripping, old fiberglass insulation, and oakum. The material should span the crack, but it should not be packed so tightly that it cannot compress somewhat. Place the material at least 1/2" deep or at 1/4 of the cracks depth. Apply multiple beads of caulking to fill.
