Does anyone have plans/suggestions for building an outdoor fireplace/firepit using stones ranging in diameter from 6-15inches?

For plans try the library, "how to" barbecue plan books, (possibly Ortho, Sunset, Better Homes & Gardens, Popular Mechanics, and the like) or one of the project publications from www.bia.org (http://www.bia.org) (for brick, but, so what). Use the stone as facing and not in the firebox. Some stones retain water and will explode or crack when heated. Also: check with the Building and Fire Departments. I know of one case where the Fire Department required a burn permit, and yearly inspection, for fueling with anything other than gas or charcoal. If it's permanent a building permit is required.
