Hello. I am trying to take down a door because it needs to be planed. I'm not sure how to get the hinges apart to take it down. Can someone explain this to me?

Thanks.

Hi, Most have a pin that hold the leafs together just use a nail or a old phillip screwdriver and put it in the bottom of the hinge and drive it up with a hammer. Some hinges have caps on the bottom or allens on the side, but most do not just check. When you plane the door DO NOT plane by the lock set even if you remove the lock set you will ruin the door. If you have to narrow the door remove the hinge leafs and plane the hinge side then reset the hinges. Go slow, just alittle at a time. Good Luck woodbutcher

Thanks Woodbutcher! I got the door off just fine. When you say reset the hinges, does that mean I'll need to make those grooves for the hinges deeper or do I just plane a little of the door off and then put the hinges back on the way they were?

If you plane the hinge side then it is necessary to set the hinge mortise in the door or the door will still close as it did before. Before planing check whether the hinges are flush to the door. Section the each mortise into 3 parts with two cuts from a utility knife as it is easier to remove smaller sections of wood evenly with a chissell (bevel side down) l l l l
