I want to paint the uncovered brick patio - that is exposed to rain and snow and sun - with a latex porch & floor enamel. Has anyone any experience with a project like this? Would sealing it after the paint job help preserve it?

If the brick is laid on a sand bed or is in direct contact with the ground painting it would be a bad idea. Any type of film coating will fail due to moisture migration.
Additionally the brick can spall or crack because of the barrier coating. I have never painted brickwork flat work for the former reasons. The only possible solution that I can think of is a pigmented masonry stain (of the penetrating breathable type).
