hello :)
My husband and I are building a fish pond in our back yard. We are making a brick wall to surround it.
I have never worked with bricks before. my husband has but it was many many years ago.
The bricks we have are old used bricks - they have old morter on them. The old morter turns to powder with a bit of effort.
My question is Do we have to clean the bricks Before we use fresh morter on them to make the wall? Can we leave the old morter on them or should we scrape every one of these bricks clean? My husband thinks we have to clean them all of the decayed morter to safely use them. What do you all think?
Thank you much :) for your time and thoughts.

Your husband is correct. It's a messy job, but necessary.
