Can someone tell me why it's such a bad idea to connect a video game system to a big screen TV? We have my son's Playstation 2 connected to our Hitachi 50" projection TV, and when reading the manual for a new game last night, I noticed a warning that you shouldn't do this because severe damage to the TV may result? Can someone explain what type of "damage" can occur and what makes video game systems any different than a DVD player or VCR? Btw...I noticed nothing in the TV's manual that states NOT to connect a video game system. Thanks!

Good Morning, janedo1586:

You're dealing with apples and oranges in this instance. And, yes, you should never run game machines on the projection units. The reason is that the game units images that do not change and images with large blocks of color. This will cause "image retention" on the phospher of the projection tubes and will damage the tubes. The only fix for this failure is to replace the projection tubes in the set. For that, you need a second mortgage on the house.
A good FAQ to check on this issue is at

and look at Chapter 19.3

On the plus side, projection television is gradually changing over to the newer, brighter LCD projection technology and this problem will go away. But, in the meantime, if the manufacturer posted the warning in your user's manual, believe it. If the set fails under warranty from this abuse, the manufacturer is not liable for the repairs.

A standard television set or computer monitor uses a different technology and the picture tubes are designed to work with sustained images and large blocks of color.

So, if the kids want to run their games, it is best to put them on the old TV in the bedroom.
