Hi - I have a 7 year old 25" RCA TV that's been having static problems. It'll be fine for awhile and then the reception will get really bad and static-y until I reach behind the TV and jiggle the cable cord connected to the back - this clears it right up (until the next time). I've tried a different cord with no luck. I've also tried connecting the cable box directly to the TV without going through the VCR and it still happens. I can't think of anything else to try - any ideas? Thank you!!!

Good Morning, kjb0710:

This problem seems to be showing up on this forum more and more.

If you changed the cable to the set then the problem is more likely either the connector on the back of the set or the cable connection (inside the set) from the back to the channel selector. More than likely, there is a bad solder connection.

The only fix is to remove the back and have a look. If it is a bad solder connection, you can repair the problem with a low heat soldering iron (not a soldering GUN) and a little 60-40 electronic solder (available from Radio Shack).

If the connector on the back is bad, Radio Shack sells a replacement for the unit at a decent price. It isn't too difficult to replace it.

But, best guess says it is a solder connection.

This condition is very common with RCA's and GE's of this age group. You need to resolder all of the broken/fractured soldered pin connections along the perimeter of the tuner module (silver metal box) at the rear of the circuit board.
If you allow the television to keep running this way...it will eventually cause a chip to fail called the EPROM and worste case...the high voltage components could eventually fail also.
Solder those connections as soon as possible.
Good luck!
