Hi, I hope someone can help me with this. I saw a product on "HomeAgain" show that I did not get the name of and need help locating. I have a basement that we are finishing and although we have daylight windows, they are completely covered by deck. I saw a product that was made of wood and had slats. It looked like a register grill but a lot biggger. You put in in a hole cut in deck to let light get down into basement windows. Does anyone know who makes these or where I can get info. on them?
Thanks.

The problem of the deck blocking light to the basement below it has been brought up many times in this forum. A lot of creative solutions have been tried, most with little or no success. The wood grates you mention would seem to have one big drawback. The spacing between the slates would have to be fairly wide to allow light to pass through, which means they would be a tripping hazard. If you go with a system like this, put a railing around the grates to prevent them from being walked. (That portion of your deck then becomes unusable!). Rather than trying to buy the grates, make your own out of 2X2's.

Loss of exterior lighting by decks and porches is a common complaint. It's one of those you can't have your cake and eat it too situations. To compensate for loss of exterior lighting you must make up for it with interior lighting. There are many interior lighting options these days.

Hello
Getting light though a deck can be done the same way you get a skylight to let in light.....If the windows and deck are on the sunny side of the house you can use sheet metal to bounse the light down to the basement...the sky light through the deck need not be huge...narrow and long take up 2-3 boards next to the wall over the windows and add a rail to make them safe a little thought and planning could make it very nice.....Good Luck
