I need a new big tv. Should I buy an analog 27 " tv which will last about ten years like my old one, by which time all stations will be broadcasting in digital and analog tv's won't be available or should buy a MUCH more expensive digital tv now. The question really is will I have any problems receiving stations on a analog tv in the next ten years if I buy one which I prefer to do rather than buy a digital tv?I understand I will have to buy a tv top box to convert digital signals to analog ,when broadcast stations convert to digital.
This is a real delema which must be affecting a lot of viewers.

Good Morning, David:
Yes, I assume a lot of folks are pondering this situation. We are approaching the crossroads of television and will eventually get away from the analog units and everything will be HDTV digital.
The old VCR and the outside antenna will be a thing of history when this happens, of course. The industry is going to force you into the digital world eventually.
When the shift to the new technology begins, there will be a
"grandfather" stage whereas you will need a converter box to use your older analog television set. After a period of time, the
converters will no longer be available or be used. At that time, you will definitely need a digitally capable television set or or just play your old videotapes on your old set.
But, there is time yet. If this were going to happen suddenly, there would not be so many analog sets on the market. The
strategy would dictate that they would start pulling them off the market and substitute the new digital sets.
Right now the digital sets are expensive but as the technology changes, they will go down in price. If you recall your history, this was the same thing that happened when the industry made the change from Black and White to color.
If you want to follow the normal transition, you can go ahead and buy that analog set. Later, you can change to the converter. Later, still, you can ultimately change to a digital set and, hopefully, the prices will be more in keeping with the economy.
But, the switch is going to happen and it is good that you are aware of it.
