Doors and Windows - Garage Side entry doors

:confused: My husband and I built a new double garage this last summer. We have been slowly completing the project and have just had the inspector out to go over it and sign off on the building permit. Unfortunately we are having a problem with the two side entrance doors. Because the garage is closer than 6 feet to the house, we have to have doors that are 20 minute rated doors (and have self-closing hinges). We were originally told by the zoning office that we had to have solid doors (no windows). That is what we purchased (steel). Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be a UL sticker on the doors. The store (one of those do it yourself superstores) personnel said that if we called in with the cat number they could tell us if they were 20 minute rated doors. When we did that, they said yes they were, but when we questioned why a sticker wasn't on the doors, they said they must not be rated then. Are we looking in the wrong place. Has anyone else had this problem? They don't want to unbox the doors at the store to show us the sticker. Catch 22.

Keep going over people's heads until you can get a correct answer from that superstore that sold you those doors.

Fire rated doors are very common. I would probably go about it in a different manner. I would go to the store looking to purchase another door. Don't say anything about the doors you already have. Tell them what you want to look at. They will be glad to show you if they think they can make a sale. Usually doors are not packaged in a box, only a wrapper and the whole door can be viewed easily. My question is are you sure it is a only a 20 minute rating ? Usually it is a 60 minute door, but every area is different. Good Luck

Fire rated doors are available with lables and without. I'm not sure why their avialable both ways. Commercial applications usually require the label to be on the unit. It might be simply be cosmetics and convenience. A commercial inspector can inspect a building much quicker with everything (sticker)labeled as a house a residential inspector may take the time to look at paperwork or even take your word for it. Check the catalogue number with the manufacturer and ask the inspector if a lable is required to be riveted or attached to the unit.
