Hi. My Montgomery Ward television is being bothersome. Periodically, it mutes and unmutes itself. As it does this it displays the station number. At other times, it is fine. It is some years old. Is there anything I can do, or is it just old age?

Good Morning, Filo:

When I see these kind of problems, I always lean toward a remote control problem.

Think about the fact that remote controls are IR (infra-red) and the set operates on coded light pulses.

Now, have you introduced any new light sources into the room with the television set? A Lava Lamp? A fish tank? Some of these items put out a light frequency that will trigger the set's remote systems.

We've found a few cases where you can repair it with a piece of black electric tape. Cut a small horizontal hole in the tape about
1/8" wide and maybe a 1/2" long. Place the piece of tape over the remote control sensor on the front of the TV so that the
hole in the tape is parallel to the floor. This desensitizes the remote to other light sources and will sometimes cure the problem for you.

Smokey ;)
