Hi There,
I have Gibson Gas Furnace (25 years old) which intially would make a humming sound for about 20 seconds before the blower would kick in and work for the required duration. Now the Burner will light up as the themostat requires but the blower will not turn on. There is a manual switch for the blower which used to work fine before and now I can't even get that to work. Please help.

With power off, remove blower panel.Spin blower wheel by hand it should spin easy.If not motor is going bad.Move blower wheel up and down back and forth. There should be little shaft play.If blower does not turn easy check to see if it has oil ports,it might help to oil bearings.Could be run capacitor also.PDF

Hi PDF
Took a look at the blower motor and it seems to be in order,
there is no play and it spins smoothly. How do I check the
capacitor and is there anything I can do before calling a
service person.

Thanks

Remove panel. You should see a round, gray oval container. That is your capacitor.First try this. You should see a brown or black 2" square box. This is your fan relay. It will have wires going to fan motor.Should be 2 skinny wires(24volts).The 2 thicker wires are for motor. With POWER OFF,connect the 2 thicker wires going to motor together.Turn power on.If motor starts relay needs to be replaced.PDF

:) Thanks PDF
While I was trying to trouble shoot as you suggested, I tried to
manually turn on the fan with the manual switch once again and Lord behold, with that buzzing sound there was something glowing inside the fan motor. On opening the fan motor I saw that the power supply connections were loose and were shorted . I am assuming that due to vibrations of the motor itself that connectors became loose.
I plan to replace it new connectors soon and then see if the problem is solved. I only hope that shorting was due to the connectors becoming loose.
