i have an american standard toilet that does not have a traditional float ball setup. it has a solid assembly that sits to the left side of the tank. it does not shut the water off when the tank is full. has a small plastic top the screws off. i removed it and now the is water also leaking from the area under that.not the cap itself but under it. does anyone know how to fix this problem. thank you in advance

Yep.
Get a Fluidmaster 400A float-cup type fill assembly (about $7-$8 bucks) and replace it. Just follow the directions that come with it. Easy.
