I have a wood cieling tonge and groove which has been stained and varnished, I would like to know if I could gloss over it without sanding first. Or is there a type of paint that will cover it, I really don,t want to sand it mainly because of the mess and the fact it,s time consuming. Please help!

Best to use an oil based paint..Either satin wood or eggshell x 2 coats. If you want a matt finish then you will have to prime first with an oil based primer/undercoat and then paint as normal...Because its the ceiling that you are painting, there is less chance of chipping or scratching occuring..The easiest way to paint tonge and groove is to paint in the grooves with a brush and roll the rest with a gloss sleeved roller.
