Hi i tried installing a new thermostat and when i turned it on it turned on for a sec and then it went out and i tried putting the old one back but that won't work either, what does this mean?

First thought would be something was mis-wired which smoked the transformer. A quick way to find out is to kill power to the furnace, remove the Red and Green wires from the stat, twist them together then turn the power back on. If the fan starts, your ok. If not you let the smoke out! If thats the case best bet is to contact a HVAC contractor.

You probably fried your transformer or you tripped the circuit breaker. Always good to turn off power when working with electricity.

i did turn off the electricity from the circut from the heater in the basement. what do i need to do to check if the transformer is fried? thanks

You need a volt meter tester. You take one probe and you put it on the red wire connection on your thermostat and the other probe on the white wire connection. You do not have to remove the wires from the thermostat. The volt tester will move if there is power or the little light will come on, depending which one you have.

i opened up the heater in the basement and i found a fuse, it got burned so im gonna replace that to see if it works. thanks for the help.
