I am starting my own electrical business next summer and I have been quized by future customers about gas furnaces, etc. I know a little from what I learned in trade school, but I want to find as many resources as I can about troubleshooting, common problems and fixes for HVAC systems as I can. I don't expect to be able to fix everything, but minor repair and service could account for a lot of my work. Even if I can diagnose the problem and direct the customer on further action.

Thanks for your time and help.

This is the Boston Bruins fan. Most of HVAC is vicarious learning(hands on).Your best bet is to team up with a HVAC or refrigeration who need systems to be wired up.Start learning from them.If you are not familiar with reading wiring diagrams it is difficult.HOWEVER you do have 1 plus---more than 60% of HVAC/REF problems are elctrical.I have yet to meet an electrician who can wire a 7.5 ton walk-in-freezer---The defrost circuit, pump down, tstat circuit,or defrost clock. If you are young buy some HVAC/REFRIGERATION manuals.Look them over To get a foresight into the NUMEROUS systems that are out there.I am not knocking electricians.I hope you carry thru with this and learn. If other TECHS on this forum reply to your thread you will find out that we as HVAC/REFER TECHS have an "EAR" and a "FEEL" by just listening to a system.Remember if you are doing wiring or add ons to a home and a customer says "Hey my etc, etc, isn't working.Tell them you will take a peek at it "no extra" charge.Heck, you are all ready there.Give the forum a holler back.We will be glad to assist you in any way.We have good knowledgeble people here.P.S. Thanks for the info and suggetions. I have wired some walk in coolers, etc. But I guess what I am mostly concered with is furnaces. I am movin to a rural area and I knowthey are hurting for someone to service furnaces. I would like to be able to at least solve simple problems and know where and what to check for. What to expect thing to do, etc.

I've been in this field a lot of years and have never found that the two (HVAC and Electrical) businesses could be combined. The best way to handle that would be to hook-up with a HVAC contractor you trust and would have no problem recommending to customers. He would have to feel the same about you then you could both stick to what you know best and pass work on to each other. This is not something you can jump into after reading books, going to school etc. and make a great go of. It takes focus and a lot of on the job training. Puttering here and there could get you in trouble and ruin customer relations.
