My house was build in 1972. All of my base boards have several coats of paint and it doesn't look good. My question is, can I remove the base boards to strip them without distrubing my carpet. Thank you

Should be able to. The watchword is "go slow". The only problem I could see is nails that might be near the bottom of the base wihich you could just cut with a pair of diagonal cutters. When you go to pull the nails from the baseboard, pull it out from the back. Don't try to pund them back out the fron of the baseboard. Use the diagonal cutters to just pry them out the back. Numbering the boars with a coreesponding number on the wall might not be such a bad idea either. That way you would know that you are putting the baseboard in the right order.

One question, is it going to be economically feasable to strip the baseboard instead of just replacing it. Is it a decorative type of moulding. If it's just a plain base, I would just replace it. The chances of getting a board that will split or break when you remove it is a high possibility.

I did try to remove them. And you are right they started to split, so I decided to leave them alone for now. I'll wait until I can get new carpet. I tryed to find baseboards like mine several years ago and had no luck. They are higher then most. I was going to use my heat gun to remove all the paint. I just love that thing. All the doors in the house are six panel doors and the heat gun really does a good job of getting all the paint out of the curves, with a little help from a small screwdriver. I was able to get the frames from around the windows off without hurting them. Thank you so much for all of your help.
