We have this beautiful deck, but are embarrased to have any out door funtions at our home, due to the horrible paint job that it has. A year or two after the deck was built we decided to add a bit of color to it, and now it just looks bad. The paint we used has started to peel because it has been so long, and we just want it gone so that we may use a stain to make our deck look better and more nautral. How do we go about getting the already half peeled paint off of our deck? We've tried taking a hose with a special nozzel to it, and it works in some areas, but its a little harder in others, besides, we'd like to get the paint off before the winter comes and at that rate its not going to happen.

PhotoChic,
There are a number of deck strippers avaiable, you need to find one that says it will remove solid color stain or paint. They contain sodium hydroxide(lye) and you need to follow the safety precautions carefully, especially regarding eye protecton. A pressure washer will help tremendously. A second application is sometimes required. I put the stripper solution in a small tub and roll it on with a paint roller. Another caution is the wood gets very slippery. If the balusters are also painted a rubber glove and a car mitt over that can be used to go over the vertical posts with the stripper.
Unfortunately, you've learned the lesson: Don't pain decks exposed to the elements - they will peel!!
good luck,
fred
